The Diabetes Mixer was founded in 2011 by Michelle Litchman, nurse practitioner, and MJ Tran as a way to provide community support for their patients with type 1 diabetes, without violating HIPAA laws. Hosted in a non-clinical atmosphere, the Diabetes Mixer offers free food, live music, a featured speaker, swag bags, and prizes; its like a party! This social networking event was expanded to not only include Michelle’s patients, but any adult with type 1 diabetes in Utah or the surrounding areas. A great way for individuals with type 1 diabetes and their significant others to meet, engage, and connect; the Diabetes Mixer has more than doubled in size since inception.
Initially the Diabetes Mixers were sponsored by Sigma Theta Tau International, Gamma Rho Chapter, a non-profit honors nursing society based out of the University of Utah. In 2013 the Diabetes Mixer became a program under the DCAF umbrella and aims to expand its focus by hosting Diabetes Mixers in other parts of the country for various groups and individuals affected by diabetes. This event is also supported by businesses interested in diabetes care management including companies focused on diabetes supplies, medications, insulin pumps, and continuous glucose monitoring systems.
The next Diabetes Mixer event is September 16, 2013 in Salt Lake City, UT. Sean Busby will share about “Riding the Waves.”
